Distillers who have joined the “farm-to-bar” movement are turning out liquors from unusual sources, like vodka made from sweet potatoes, or infusing their spirits with fresh ingredients like cranberries and coriander. Home distillers are getting on the bandwagon as well, making cordials and liqueurs, which are easier to produce than hard liquors like whiskey and vodka.
The distilling renaissance, it seems, has only just begun. Artisanal, handcrafted goods have reached the liquor cabinet, big time: The number of craft distillers in the United States grew from 52 in 2005 to 234 at the end of 2011, according to the American Distilling Institute.
