Food News, Week of August 14: How to Help Louisiana Flood Victims

Baton Rouge and much of southern Louisiana has experienced historic flooding, leaving many people homeless. Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana (501c3) is accepting donations.

Recall Alert! Oriental Packing Co. Inc. recalled approximately 188.5 tons of curry seasoning for lead contamination. Brand names include Blue Mountain, Jamaica Choice, Ocho Rios, Oriental, and Grace. The recalled spices were distributed in New York and Florida and sold online and in stores across the country.

There’s a global threat to banana crops and no one really knows how to deal with it. Black leaf streak disease is caused by a fungus that’s so resistant to treatment that this study on PLOS Genetics says it “poses an immediate threat to sustainable banana production.”

Can the whole city of Turin, Italy, go vegetarian? Chiara Appendino, Turin’s new mayor, is using government programs to tout the benefits of a vegan and vegetarian diet. It’s all a part of her goals to address climate change, reduce animal cruelty, and improve public health overall.
