Artisanal, well-crafted cocktails have officially replaced sugary-sweet cosmos and chocolate cake shots. Bartenders are now called mixologists, cocktails can legitimately take 15 minutes to concoct, and oversized ice cubes (or ice spheres), which melt slower than regular ice cubes, are standard-issue at even more modest bars. A great cocktail can simply consist of quality gin and tonic, or a handcrafted vodka and vermouth. But a drink with depth and complexity calls for extra such as bitters, freshly squeezed juice, zest or locally grown herbs. It is possible to make professional-grade cocktails at home, though, and these stories can help.
